Why I’m happy, a client fired me!
A few weeks ago, I was fired by a client! One of my team’s 2023 couples asked for a phone call to chat about editing. I figured it would be about how we light receptions or what happens in harsh lighting etc. All things couples have asked in the past, and I’m confident to educate them on. This call went a little differently!
The Client Fired Me!
But it didn’t bother me. In fact, I was happy! Yes, I lost $$$ and was happy about it! Hear me out. When you have a customer who is unsure of what they want, it is hard to please them. In fact, is damn near impossible. In my photography brand, I am very straightforward and consistent about what product we deliver. From the experience, you receive with us on your wedding day to the final photo product. I keep it consistent, so couples are confident in booking us, knowing what the final product will be. Consistency is a big brand pillar for me.
Why They Fired me?
Consistency. Because I create strong consistency, it is easy for me to establish boundaries in my business. So when during their phone call, they asked if I could edit their photos dark & moody, (I’ll pause for the photographer gasp), it was an easy ‘No.’ It was so easy; in fact, they respected it and respected me more! They didn’t leave my business with a sour taste in their mouth; no, they left with respect for my boundaries. How? I was able to clearly state the style of photo editing we offer and why! It’s part of our mission statement! (that’s strong consistency if I’ve ever seen it!) THIS is why consistency should be a valuable pillar in your branding.
Your Consistency Matters
When you create a brand that’s consistent, you establish a recognizable brand. Think about it, if Coke all of a sudden turned its logo purple, you’d be upset! Their brand wouldn’t make sense! Their consistency keeps them so recognizable that they are known all over the work by a red logo. So when DeLine Photography images land in front of someone in our market, they know right away that’s our work. I don’t want to mess that up! Brand recognition is no easy task; once you have it you don’t want someone else’s indecisiveness to muddy up the recognizability of your brand. You’re not just being consistent; you’re building trust with your ideal clients.
